I was lucky enough to of been introduced to the Vineyard Hotel and Spa in Newlands. I was there on Sunday, 2 January 2011 and then again today (3 January 2011). It is a beautiful setting – much like the Kirstenbosch gardens. On a pleasant day, the outdoors seating is perfect.

The setting was enjoyable and I found it great to get away from busy shopping centers at this time of the year. This will most defiantly become a regular location for me when I am in the area. Price wise, I would say that it is on par with a normal coffee shop that one would find in any shopping center.

One line summary: High quality service and cuisine in a perfect setting, at an affordable and competitive rates.

The address is: Colinton Road, Newlands, 7700.
Online: www.vineyard.co.za

I went for the classic tasting which was enjoyable (and free), however a friend of mine tried the Ultra Premium range which was amazing.

This evening I decided I was going to cook for my family. I went into the kitchen with no idea of what I was going to make – but in the end the outcome was most acceptable.

So incase (by some rare chance) you want to try and make it yourself, here is how to go about it;

You will need the following things;

1 fresh tomato

1 large onion

1 small can / tin of tomato paste

550 grams of ground beef

Spices (ginger, cinnamon, chili powder, chili bits, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt)

1 can / tin of red kidney beans

1 1/2 cups of greek style yogurt

Olive oil

So now that we have these details, you would go about producing the end product as such;

Wash the tomato and onion

Chop the ends of the onion of and peel the skin (I think thats what you call the layers covering the actual onion)

Chop the onions and tomatos (they can be fairly largely sliced / chopped)

Put the pot on the stove and insert a fair amount of olive oil

Wait for the olive oil to start heating up, then add the chopped up onion

Add the spices all together and mix with the onion

Once the onions have become brown, add the ground beef, kidney beans and tomatos

Add the tomato paste and 1/4 cup of water

Once the ground beaf has cooked, drop the temperature on the stove to a simmering level and add the greek style yogurt

Leave to simmer for 20 minutes

This can be served with rice (as I did) and I also added some peas and corn and a few carrots (more for colour). Hope it works for you.

Enjoy,

I tried my hand at cooking and found a basic butter chicken recipe online and have modified it heavily. However, many people have asked for my recipe, so rather than sending it to everyone, I decided it could make a good blog post.

Firstly, you need no talent what so ever to make this – I havent got any when it comes to food, but this is really easy

So what will you need?

12 chicken fillets (breasts)

2 tins of tomato puree

2 cups of fresh cream

1 red pepper

1 green pepper

1 yellow pepper

2 chillies

2 onions

250g butter

Dry Spices

Depending on how spicy you want the meal to be – you can select the desired amounts of spices. I make use of the following;

Ginger

Paprika

Chilli Powder

Chilli Bits

What to do with all this stuff;

You will need a large pot. In this pot first put the butter and onions (cut into rings), let the onions brown. Once browned, put the dry spices in and the chicken (cut into small strips), once the chicken is browned and “tender”, add the tins of puree, the chilli’s and the peppers.

Let this cook for 10 minutes, then add the cream and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. This period should allow for the thickening of the sauce.

Hope you enjoy,
